Belief 1. Awareness and openness are active ingredients of the placebo.

A recent study by scientists at Northwestern University found that patients who reacted most positively to placebos had greater openness to experience and emotional awareness, and were less distracted by pain and discomfort.

The placebo phenomenon is proof that the body can heal itself through belief.

Belief 2. Expectation is the medication.

From the BBC: “Placebo works through belief, suggestion and expectation … Placebo treatment prompts the brain to release endorphins – naturally occurring hormones that act similarly to morphine and codeine. For this reason, placebos are especially effective in pain and depression.”

Belief 3. The more we talk about how effective it is, the more effective it becomes.

Belief 4. The digital placebo is no less real.

Relief comes from belief. So it doesn’t matter whether it’s a physical pill or a virtual one. What’s important is the journey, and the expectation that builds along the way.
